Democrat Zack Mullock unseated Representative Jeff Van Drew, one of offshore wind’s biggest foes, on Tuesday night in the race for New Jersey’s second district. But while Mullock is a fan of renewable energy, he’s still a man of the south Jersey shore — and unlikely to be a champion for turbines off his coast. District 2 encompasses the entire lower quarter of the state, covering six coastal counties from Atlantic City down to the tip of Cape May and around to the Delaware Bay. The area is a hotbed for offshore wind opposition, where groups like Protect our Coasts NJ have filed legal challenges against almost every wind project proposed in the region. After heading to Congress in 2019, Van Drew, who was previously a Democrat, switched parties and became a key ally to this movement. He called for a moratorium on offshore wind development, held hearings on offshore wind “industrialization”, and requested that the Government Accountability Office investigate the industry. He also worked with the Trump administration to block projects that were under construction. During a debate in late October, Mullock accused Van Drew of flip flopping on wind, arguing that the congressman was a staunch supporter of the industry during his decade-long tenure in the New Jersey legislature. Mullock, who is currently serving his second term as mayor of the city of Cape May, summed up his own position by citing a resolution he signed in 2023 calling for a moratorium on surveying and acoustic testing for offshore wind development pending an investigation into a spate of whale deaths. He signed it due to “concerns” about the environment and commercial fishing, he said. “I believe very much in our future with renewable energy,” he said. “We need to go full steam ahead with solar panels. And yes we should do wind where it is appropriate, where it doesn't hurt our environment and it doesn't hurt our commercial fishing industry.” Mullock’s campaign website says he supports federal investments

On Tuesday night, the Chicago area will be deep in midterm election results, with the governor’s race, the U.S. Senate and, of course, the balance of power in Congress all up for grabs. But on Monday, some voters discovered early voting wasn’t so quick, with hourslong waits reported at some locations. “On Point Politics” estimates 1.6 million ballots have been cast in Illinois by early voters. At Truman College in Chicago, voters were told the wait could be as long as three hours. “Coming from Florida, I’ve never seen a turnout like this, so it’s super neat,” one voter, Haleigh Carter, said. Even at the tail end, Carter and Greg Hardy said they felt empowered. “It’s 100% worth it, and this is early voting, so that goes on top of it as well,” he said. For these first-time Illinois voters, Greg said their experience “just goes to show how important [voting] is.” The midterm ballot includes the race for governor, with Democratic incumbent JB Pritzker facing Republican challenger Darren Bailey in a rematch from 2022. At the Chicago Board of Elections downtown Supersite, where lines appeared to be moving faster, voters were also casting ballots in the U.S. Senate race. Democratic Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton and former Illinois Republican Party chair Don Tracy are vying for the seat long held by Sen. Dick Durbin. All 17 of Illinois’ congressional seats are also up for grabs. ‘Trying to protect our democracy that’s on the ropes right now,” one voter, Joe, said. “I want to see the flip, but I also want to see action behind the flip,” Marcellus, another voter, stated. And the balance of power is at stake. Whether Democrats can regain control on Capitol Hill will be decided as election results come in Tuesday night. On Tuesday, Election Day, the site administrator at Truman College expects people to be waiting outside before the location opens up again at 6 a.m.
The candidates for Illinois governor, Democratic Gov. JB Pritzker and Republican Darren Bailey, made their final pitches to voters one day before Tuesday’s midterm election. It’s the same matchup the state saw four years ago in 2022, when Pritzker defeated Bailey by almost 13 points. “We’re not taking anything for granted,” Pritzker told Democrats in Collinsville, near St. Louis, on Monday morning. Though Pritzker insists he’s not overconfident in his own race, his closing message focused on Washington, D.C. He predicted Democrats will take the U.S. House and Senate. Voters will decide whether to give the governor a third term, but his comments Monday show he’s already focused on the rest of the country. “You can see in the voter turnout that we’ve seen across the country that young people, Black voters, Latino voters, and working families are showing up in numbers we haven’t seen really since before 2018. That was a huge year. This one seems to be even bigger,” Pritzker said. Bailey is trying to flip the governor’s office red for the first time since Bruce Rauner left in 2019. “JB Pritzker’s had eight years. Look at where we’re at,” Bailey told reporters in downtown Chicago Monday morning. Bailey has President Donald Trump’s endorsement at a time when polls show voters are demanding a change in D.C. His Election Eve pitch comes from Chicago, the city he once called a “hellhole” during his previous campaign. “Some of you out there have never voted for a Republican before. Some of you have questions about me and some of you obviously disagree with me. I respect that,” Bailey said. On his first day in office, Bailey wants to suspend the gas tax for six months and roll back the toll increase. When NBC Chicago asked about Pritzker’s future plans to make life affordable, his campaign pointed to policies he’s already enacted, like nearly doubling the minimum wage and eliminating the state grocery tax. Apple shares slipped 1.2% on October 30, leaving it with a market cap of $5.03 trillion, while NVIDIA dropped 4.2% to close at $4.93 trillion. This is the first time Apple has been ahead since it briefly overtook NVIDIA in late July. For context, NVIDIA became the first company to cross $5 trillion almost exactly a year ago, in October 2025. Friday's sell-off came after a run of tech earnings that disappointed investors, with Intel and Amazon following earlier reports from Alphabet and Meta. Intel's stock fell roughly 29% on Friday after a weak Q4 outlook, which CNBC called its worst day since the 1970s. It looks like the bigger concern is whether the huge spending on AI data centers will pay off, and NVIDIA, as the main supplier of AI GPUs, is directly tied to those budgets. The outlays have grown large enough that Alphabet and Amazon have seen their free cash flow turn negative, pushing them toward debt markets for funding. Apple, meanwhile, has largely stayed out of the AI infrastructure race and kept its capital spending in check. Its shares are up 27% this year, more than twice NVIDIA's gain, and its free cash flow for fiscal 2026 (ended September 30) is projected to climb 38% to $142 billion. The gap between the two is only about $100 billion, though, so the ranking could easily flip back with one good day for NVIDIA.

A good and creative costume will only go so far this Halloween. Now instead of just the costume, TikTok users are focusing on its reveal. The trend follows a simple template: Users appear wearing normal clothes and no makeup under text that reads “costume loading.” A quick transition later, users reveal their extravagant costumes to viewers. Unlike most trends, which are tied to a specific song, “costume loading” can use virtually any TikTok sound (audio clip). Oftentimes, users try pairing the costume with a relevant song or sound. Take content creator Kirby J, who paired her “disco” costume with a disco song—”Let’s Groove” by the American band Earth, Wind & Fire. For the first few seconds of the video, she appears wearing pajamas sans makeup, then does a hair flip, instantly swapping her loungewear for a silver mirror-ball-inspired dress. In another costume-loading video, a couple are dressed up as Fiona and Shrek from the Shrek franchise, accompanied by a sound clip mixing dialogue from the animated movie with Britney Spears’ “Womanizer.” Many others used popular sounds instead of on-theme songs, coming up with their own creative transitions. Content creator Camilla Araujo danced in a bathrobe with “costume loading” written on the screen. Then she quickly struck a pose and transformed into Sharpay Evans, a character from Disney’s High School Musical. Her partner followed, posing and transforming into Sharpay’s brother Ryan. For other creators, the reveal was stretched out a little longer, bringing in a different element, one by one. In the costume-loading video that Brooke Monk posted, she first revealed a blue wig, then the makeup, and lastly the outfit—becoming Jinx from the animated series Arcane. But while the trend continues to rise throughout Halloween weekend, it does come with an expiration date, expected to fade once the holiday passes.
